Expertise and key strengths
I oversee regulatory compliance for the firm, liaising with organisations such as the SRA (Solicitors Regulatory Authority), Law Society, Information Commissioners Office and external Lexcel assessors.
My role is to ensure that the firm keeps up-to-date with the increasing regulatory requirements faced by all legal practices.
I also work with external providers of services to ensure that they meet our high standards of client care and service quality, and comply with any regulatory constraints and obligations placed upon them.
In March 2013, we successfully secured the Law Society’s Lexcel Practice Standard. Lexcel is an optional, recognised accreditation scheme for law firms which gives assurance to clients that a practice meets high client care and business management standards.
To gain and retain Lexcel accreditation, a practice must go through a rigorous initial testing and then annual applications and inspections. All of the work involved was conducted under my management and our status was retained in in 2014 and 2015, before being upgraded to the new tougher Lexcel Version 6 standard in 2016.
I also manage our Police Claims and Civil Liberties Team, and oversee all claims within that department on a day to day basis.
Before becoming a lawyer, I ran my own business for three years and then returned to university. In 1998, I graduated from the University of Hull in with an LLB Hons (First Class), and was awarded three academic prizes during the course of my law degree. I have also had articles published in academic journals and the legal press. I joined Hudgell Solicitors in 2009, after being the Head of Civil Litigation at my previous firm. Hudgell Solicitors has expanded considerably since I joined and gone from strength to strength.
Proudest professional achievement
My proudest result has been securing a seven figure award for a client who had suffered severe injuries at work, which meant that he’d never be able to walk or work again. He received sufficient compensation to make him financially comfortable for the rest of his life. I was also delighted to be shortlisted for the ‘Compliance Office of the Year’ award for the 2014 Modern Law Awards, recognising the work I had done in ensuring a culture of compliance across the company. I also take great pride in the fact that the Police Claims and Civil Liberties Team which I helped establish at Hudgell Solicitors has established such a good reputation with clients and specialist Counsel for providing a good, practical, friendly and professional service.
