Spinal Cord Injury
Expertise and key strengths
I have worked on numerous cases involving brain injury and spinal cord injury, including the case of B v B, a spinal cord injury case which settled for £6 million, the case of J v J, a spinal cord injury case which settled for £2.7 million and the case of D v B, a catastrophic brain injury case which resulted in an award of £4.45 million.
In my spare time, I work as a volunteer Trustee/Director of Headway South West London, and this has provided me with further valuable experience of working with people with acquired brain injury. I have worked with the spinal injury charity Backup Trust and I volunteered as a buddy working with wheelchair users on an activity weekend on Dartmoor.
I trained at the Howell-Jones partnership in South West London and qualified as a solicitor in 1999. From 1999 to 2013, I worked for Harris Cartier in central London, specialising in catastrophic injury claims. Since October 2013, I have worked for Hudgell Solicitors as a Senior Solicitor in their London office.
Proudest professional achievement
One of my proudest professional achievements was helping to secure the settlement of £6 million in the above case of B v B. This involved a young man who sustained a spinal cord injury and head injury in a road traffic accident and had to give up a promising career in the SAS.
I was delighted to be named the Claims Professional of the Year at the 2016 Modern Claims Awards. The award was in recognition of my work in successfully representing many victims of catastrophic injury and securing substantial six and seven figure settlements to help them start rebuilding their lives. It is rewarding to know your work is firstly appreciated by the clients you serve, but also by others in the same industry. It was a proud moment for me.
I was only paid damages in the end because of the legal support I had from Hudgell Solicitors, which gathered enough evidence with regard to what happened on the day and the extent of my injuries. I am very grateful for the support Matt gave me and for how he held them to account for their actions. – Becca Peet
