In my role I have the opportunity to really change someone’s life, and this, along with achieving a successful outcome for our clients, is always my ambition.
I take pride in making a difference for people who have, at times, struggled emotionally, mentally, physically and often financially as a result of what has happened to them.
Get to Know Mariam
Mariam is a Solicitor who qualified in 2021 and had previously worked in the legal profession for three years.
After qualification she began work within our Civil Liberties department, which handles claims against police forces, prisons and authorities. Mariam has worked on cases including actions against the police and cases linked to mesothelioma.
Her current work primarily focuses on the Post Office Horizon scandal, which has been recognised as the biggest miscarriage of justice in UK legal history. Mariam works on malicious prosecution cases, the Historical Shortfall Compensation Scheme, and Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry.
Mariam’s attendance at the Inquiry, and the preparation of key documents for use, has been crucial in ensuring our clients’ voices have been heard. Her motivation is supporting our clients through their claims emotionally and professionally and ensuring our work can help change and rebuild lives.
Career Highlights
Being a member of the team which successfully secured interim payment compensation for our clients as part of their ongoing claim against the Post Office has been one of the most memorable and proud moments of my career.
Our team often met with obstacles in the preparation for submission of these cases but once the offers started being made, the sense of achievement and recognition for our clients was huge.
I have also been involved in preparation of witness statements for use at the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry. I worked for several months with a large number of clients taking important information to enable their story to be told.
When these statements were read out at the Inquiry in front of the chairman Sir Wyn Williams, seeing the impact our clients had when giving live evidence, and the impact of the evidence in the news, I really felt my work made a difference, and contributed to a part of legal history and positive change.
Giving More
I have worked at the Personal Support Unit at Leeds Combined Court, assisting people emotionally and practically with court forms and navigating the court itself, when at times it can be an overwhelming situation to be in.
