Areas of specialism
Catastrophic injury cases, with a focus on spinal cord injury, brain injury and amputation cases.
Expertise and key strengths
I have worked for clients in many “multi-track cases”, where the claim is for more than £25,000, and I’ve also dealt with multi-million pound cases.
These include claims following paediatric surgery at the Royal Bristol Infirmary, the subject of the Bristol Heart Baby Inquiry. Other high profile cases include acting for a tetraplegic claimant awarded £9.3 million at trial.
I joined Hudgell Solicitors in October 2013 when the London office was established. I previously worked for Harris Cartier Solicitors from 1985 as a senior solicitor.
Proudest professional achievement
The £9.3 million case. At the time, it was by some considerable distance, the highest ever award of damages for compensation. Our client had just graduated from university and was involved in a road traffic accident, suffering injuries which left him tetraplegic. He was awarded £9.3 million at trial.
Another significant case was finally settled in October 2014 after eight years of legal battles. Our client, Jubair Ali, received compensation totalling £1.8 million after being left brain damaged when he was hit by an uninsured driver in 2006.
Jubair had suffered severe head and spinal injuries, and brain damage, and has since been unable to work or live alone, easily becoming confused.
Lawyers for the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB), which compensates victims of uninsured drivers, admitted 80 per cent liability for the injuries, but appealed against the scale of compensation awarded in the High Court.
They argued that the injuries were not as serious, with the matter further complicated by our client somehow passing a UK Citizenship test six years after the accident. A judge last year ruled he had passed the test through luck, and The Court of Appeal upheld that decision in October 2014, bringing a very satisfactory conclusion to a difficult, and rare case.
