Senior Solicitor, Clinical Negligence
Josie is a dual-qualified solicitor and physiotherapist who ran her own successful specialist clinical negligence firm for five years before joining Hudgell Solicitors’ London-based team in June 2017.
Having practised as a physiotherapist for 10 years before retraining to qualify as a solicitor in 2002, Josie is able to draw on her medical knowledge and clinical experience when running cases for clients.
This is particularly helpful when discussing complex medical issues with expert doctors and other health care professionals who are instructed to comment on the care her clients have received.
This specialist expertise has helped Josie develop a niche area of expertise in acting for professional sports men and women, as well as people who work in arts and entertainment, who suffer as a result of negligent medical care following injury in their jobs.
This can impact significantly on their future performance – and at worst can lead to them losing their careers and earnings – issues which often lead to cases being made for significant compensation settlements.
Josie also runs many cases relating to GP and A&E negligence, and birth injury and still birth relating to negligent medical care.
I am passionate about ensuring the people that I represent are fully compensated for losses caused by poor decisions and the failings of medical professionals.
I have natural empathy and compassion for the people who turn to me for help and support, and seeing first-hand the impact on their lives only serves to motivate me further to ensure their questions are answered and that they are fully compensated. A tenacious approach to litigation is usually required and I like to think my clients know I am understanding and passionate about their case.
One of the most tragic cases I have worked on involved the death of a successful husband and father as a result of negligent mental health care. I represented his wife at the inquest into his death and following this brought a successful claim against the NHS Trust for their serious, negligent failings.
I secured a seven-figure damages settlement which reflected the huge loss to my client and her daughter. As always in such cases it was a bitter-sweet victory as this family can never replace the person they lost. However, the settlement has provided long-term financial security for them, which was so important.
I have also led Hudgell Solicitors’ work in supporting women who have suffered life-changing injuries after undergoing vaginal mesh surgery. Thousands of UK women had a mesh implant fitted to treat pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence before they were halted due to concerns relating to ‘life-changing and life-threatening’ injuries being caused. I have supported a group of as an Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review is being conducted, and as independent experts have been consulted about the safety of their use, and concerns over a lack of consultation.
