Miscarriages of Justice
Expertise and Key Strengths
With nearly twenty years’ experience as a fully-qualified solicitor, my experience in the field of civil liberties and police law is second-to-none, offering my clients complete peace of mind when bringing a complaint against the state. I have successfully settled and won a multitude of high-profile cases issued in both the County Court and High Court, as well as several judicial review cases.
With a broad caseload comprising claims for damages and police complaints, I handle complex cases and offer outstanding legal support and guidance to my clients. My experience in this field means I’m able to advise from an expert capacity on a range of issues.
I am ranked Band 1 for police law cases and Band 2 in cases of civil liberties and human rights, giving me unparalleled knowledge and experience in bringing complaints against authorities.
I became a fully-qualified solicitor in 1999, later joining London legal practice, Fisher Meredith, in 2001. Having worked at the firm for 12 years, I was progressed to the position of Head of Police Law and Civil Liberties, as well as being a partner there. In August July 2017, I left Fisher Meredith to continue my career at Hudgell Solicitors, joining the firm’s growing civil liberties team in London.
Proudest Professional Achievement
Throughout my career I have successfully settled several high-profile cases, however, one of my proudest achievements was winning the case of Commissioner of Police v Copeland , which resulted in my client receiving a £25,200 payout after a challenging case of wrongful conviction. Initially, the police appealed the High Court ruling, but ultimately lost the appeal, with my client receiving full compensation for the incident. My recent case in the Court of Appeal in Zenati v The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis (2015) All ER (D) 124 found that the police and the CPS have a duty to act quickly upon receipt of new evidence that might exonerate those held in custody on remand.
Another of my proudest career highlights was been shortlisted for ‘Human Rights Lawyer of the Year’ award at the Law Society Excellence Awards 2016.
