Malcolm Johnson – Head of our Abuse Compensation Department talks to Julia Hartley Brewer on Talk Radio

Malcolm Johnson was interviewed today by Julia Hartley-Brewer on Talk Radio about how the recent Home Office deportations of Foreign National Offenders to Jamaica impacts on the Windrush Scandal.

A recent Court of Appeal decision, means that a number of people facing automatic deportation, will now be given the right to challenge  their deportation orders.

Julia Harley-Brewer made the point that the deportees were people convicted of serious offences were not in the same category as Windrush victims. This is what Malcolm said :-

“The Jamaican deportee case is all about people being denied access to justice, quite simply because their mobile phones did not work in the detention centres, where they were being held. They had no opportunity to reach their lawyers. There is a process for deportation and the process wasn’t followed. Some of these detainees have been in this country for many years, and they have family here.

These issues are echoed in the Windrush Scandal. People brought up this country, suddenly found themselves trapped in this bureaucratic system, facing deportation when it was plain that they had every right to be here. Like the Jamaican deportees they could not get access to their rights.”
