Neil Hudgell, of Hudgell Solicitors, and Tim Moloney QC, of Doughty Street Chambers, are representing 30 appellants at The Royal Courts of Justice this week whose cases have been referred to the Court of Appeal by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).
Of those cases, 29 have had one ground of appeal conceded by the Post Office and one case is being fully contested. Convictions date back to as long ago as 2003 in some cases, with sentences as long as three years imprisonment for offences of theft and false accounting imposed.
Following the first three days of the hearings, Mr Hudgell said: “It has been satisfying to finally see the sub-postmasters’ appeals come before the Court for a final hearing.
“These people have waited a long time to see their names cleared. They have worked tirelessly to address the injustice in their cases.
“Our clients are very hopeful that this court will see that there has been unnecessary and unjustifiable loss of life, liberty and sanity for many ordinary, decent people as a result of prosecutions that should never have happened.”
The hearings continue with judgements due to be handed down on 23rd April 2021.
