A receptionist from Hertfordshire has received over £5000 compensation after her mouth was cut during dental treatment by a dentist who blamed “slippery lipstick”.

A receptionist from Hertfordshire has received over £5000 compensation after her mouth was cut during dental treatment by a dentist who blamed “slippery lipstick”.

The injury happened in February this year when Gill Cooper, who’s 56 and from Hoddesdon, was undergoing preparatory work before having a crown fitted.

As the dentist was drilling into Mrs Cooper’s tooth, she slipped and cut the corner of Mrs Cooper’s mouth.  Although the dentist apologised, she carried on with the procedure even though Mrs Cooper’s mouth was bleeding heavily.

Mrs Cooper said:  “I was traumatised by the whole experience, felt very light-headed and afterwards my mouth was very sore for a few days.  I couldn’t eat and the experience and the injury really spoiled my birthday celebrations with my family.
“The dentist made me pay the full price for my treatment and what really made me feel angry was the way she blamed the injury on me, saying my lipstick was “slippery”.
“I’m not normally a person who takes legal action but she put me through hell and then when I saw the advert for Hudgell Solicitors I thought ‘why not, what have I got to lose?’.”

Mrs Cooper’s case was handled by Hayley Cawthorne, dental negligence specialist at Neil Hudgell Solicitors and was settled for £5,500.

Hayley said: “As soon as Mrs Cooper contacted us and I heard the details of her experience I felt she had a case.  I am very pleased that we’ve achieved a settlement for Mrs Cooper.  Whilst it can’t eradicate the pain and suffering she’s endured at least she has the comfort of having received some compensation.”

Mrs Cooper, who still has a 2cm mark on her face where the drill cut her, said: “I am very pleased at the excellent outcome.   Hayley was very pleasant, helpful and supportive and the compensation will make a big difference to me.”
