British holidaymakers travelling to Cape Verde this summer have complained of illnesses and poor hygiene standards at a number of resorts.

Our Travel Litigation Team at Hudgell Solicitors is aware of a dozen complaints at a number of hotels.

Many travellers have described symptoms of gastric illnesses such as diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and pains whilst away, and in some cases lasting until after they have returned home.

Messages posted on TUI Customer Service and Holiday Complaints Facebook page over the last week say:

“2 out of 3 of us have had diarrhoea…not one person in the hotel that I spoke to didn’t have one or the other… most people in the hotel became ill including ourselves.”

Another reported that: “I’m still here at the Cabo Verde. Everyone is so poorly. The staff serving food are now in masks. Staff are few and far between too. All four of us are really ill but due to fly home tomorrow where we will be seeing a dr as soon as possible.

“My brother is very ill. They suggested he might need a drip and he wouldn’t be the first apparently.”

Another states: “My wife and I returned from Riu Cabo Verde on Tuesday morning. Both of us have had diarrhoea, she has had cramps and sweats.

At another hotel a guest said: “We arrived home from The Palace last Thursday with upset tummies, severe cramps and sweats, my results came back today and its E-coli I have.

On the independent holiday review site TripAdvisor a guest who stayed at the Hotel Riu Funana said:

“I did (still am nearly a week later) suffer from the stomach issues that others have described, and it’s clear from speaking to others that plenty of other people around the hotel were also ill.”

Hudgell Solicitors’ travel litigation executive Anne Thomson, who has many years’ experience of representing clients who have become ill abroad, says illnesses involving shigella, e.coli and as salmonella are often due to poor hygiene standards in food preparation areas.

“Of course, sickness bugs can never be completely avoided, and it can be common for people to suffer as a result of a change in diet and climate.

“However, when we are alerted to situations where a number of holiday guests are affected by similar symptoms, particularly when they are not part of the same travelling group, we feel an investigation is needed to contain any wider outbreak and prevent future problems.

“Holidaymakers becoming ill having only ever eaten at the specific hotel they are staying at, and concerns raised by guests over standards of hygiene and cleanliness throughout premises, and not just in dining areas, are often red flags to potential underlying problems.”

Holiday sickness compensation can be claimed from tour operators and hotels.

At Hudgell Solicitors, we have experience of successfully claiming compensation from package holiday tour operators, hotels and their insurers and from cruise ship operators for health and safety breaches leading to food poisoning and bacterial infections.

If it transpires there has been an illness outbreak within hotels that could and should have been prevented, holidaymakers could receive compensation for their illness and suffering, and the loss of enjoyment on holiday, which is of course what so many people look forward to, and save money for, for so long.
