Another 10 former sub-postmasters – including two who served time in prison – are to have their convictions overturned as the campaign to clear the names of all affected by the Post Office Horizon scandal continues.
It means another significant day is set for the Court of Appeal next month, following on from a historic day in April when 39 people had their names cleared.
The new appeals have again been led by Hudgell Solicitors, having already helped 34 people have their convictions overturned in court, including two cases which were originally set to be refused by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).
Although 10 more cases are set to be quashed, submissions on behalf of 15 former sub-postmasters continue to be opposed by the Post Office.
In a further three cases the Post Office has asked for more evidence to be presented in support of appeals.
Other Post Office Horizon appeal responses to be reviewed
Solicitor Neil Hudgell, who leads the firm’s representation team on the Horizon appeal cases, said: “We are obviously very pleased on behalf of the 10 further clients whose names are now set to be cleared at the Court of Appeal.
“These are all people with very similar stories to those who have already quite rightly had their convictions quashed, and again includes some people who spent time in prison as a result of these wrongful convictions.
“There are obviously a number of appeals which have been submitted that the Post Office continues to oppose. We will now review the Post Office response in each of those cases and consider the next steps with our clients individually.
“Each case is specific and needs to be reviewed carefully, which is something our full legal team will be doing over the coming days.”
