Solicitor Neil Hudgell today welcomed a new law automatically quashing convictions relating to the Post Office IT Horizon Scandal. Between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 sub-postmasters were prosecuted because of the faulty Horizon system.
The passing of the Bill to Statute is hugely welcome. Coming in the middle of a whirlwind few days at the Inquiry it sets aside hundreds of unsafe convictions.
Clients will be anxious to have a letter in their hand confirming their exoneration and finally believe what they knew all along. Namely, that they are the innocent law-abiding people that they always have been. We know that the Government is working hard to make that happen as soon as possible.
In the meantime, and on behalf of the 140 clients whose convictions have been quashed today and who we have the privilege to look after, we will continue to work with the Government and the Department of Business to ensure the next steps are rolled out as quickly as possible.
I urge them now to take a little time to reflect on that news and let it sink in. Today is a good day for justice and for genuinely innocent people to stand tall again and to begin to look to move forward.
