How a 35-year career helping seriously injured people rebuild their lives has brought national recognition for ‘exceptional’ and ‘enormously empathetic’ London solicitor

London-based solicitor Kent Pattinson says the rewarding feeling of helping people rebuild their lives after suffering serious and life-changing injuries has driven him throughout a 35-year career which has seen him repeatedly break new legal ground – and now brought recognition from his industry peers.

London-based solicitor Kent Pattinson says the rewarding feeling of helping people rebuild their lives after suffering serious and life-changing injuries has driven him throughout a 35-year career which has seen him repeatedly break new legal ground – and now brought recognition from his industry peers.

Mr Pattinson has established a well-respected, long standing practice in the personal injury sector and has a proven track record of securing ground-breaking, multi-million pound settlements in the most challenging of cases.

Now, he has been named a shortlisted finalist in the Catastrophic Injury Lawyer of the Year category at the 2020 Personal Injury Awards – a prestigious event which highlights the very highest standards of practice in the UK legal sector, and for which winners will be announced on December 1st.

It comes as he and his personal injury colleagues Hudgell Solicitors have also been collectively shortlisted for the Claimant Team of the Year award at the same event, reflecting how the firm is leading the way in supporting hundreds of injured people across England and Wales.

Amanda Stevens, managing director for London and the south at Hudgell Solicitors, says Mr Pattinson is ‘richly deserving’ of praise, as his career has seen many  significant victories not only for himself and his present clients, but for the industry and others that have followed.

Indeed, in 1998 he successfully obtained an award of damages at trial of £9.3 million which for a considerable number of years was the highest amount of compensation ever awarded.

More recently he secured a £2.4m interim damages payment for a client – a severely disabled 12-year-old girl – at a time of uncertainty in the law due to the negative impact of a change in the “discount” rate (affecting the calculation of future losses) and problems created in obtaining an interim payment in cases where accommodation was a major cost in the claim.

The girl’s family described the payment as ‘life-changing’, as it meant they were finally able to find suitable and much needed new accommodation.

“We are also of course delighted for Kent to receive this individual recognition as he has for many years been one of the very best in the business at what he does, achieving quite remarkable results for some of our most seriously injured clients,” said Mrs Stevens.

“Kent goes about his work quietly and rarely shouts about his immense legal achievements, always focusing on the outcome for his clients.

“He is richly deserving of this recognition as he has a proven track-record in securing ground-breaking multi-million pound settlements on behalf of his clients in the most challenging of cases. He has established a reputation across the industry for his pioneering casework and his career has seen a number of significant victories not only for his clients, but of wider industry impact too.

“Ultimately, Kent is a fantastic role model for other personal injury lawyers to follow, and that has been reflected in the recognition of the judges for this award.”

Past 12 months have brought yet more multi-million pound settlements

In the past 12 months, Mr Pattinson, whose highest ever damages settlement on behalf of a seriously injured client was for £24 million, has secured yet more high value cases.

This included a £12million settlement for a client who was paralysed after suffering spinal damage in an accident when aged just seven. Again in this case, interim payments of over £2million were secured to help the boy’s family purchase and adapt accommodation and to provide for ongoing equipment, therapy and care before the final amount was agreed.

In another case settled by Mr Pattinson this year, damages of £850,000 were secured for a client who sustained a traumatic brain injury in a serious road accident. The injury prevented him from pursing a promising career in business, something which was reflected in the settlement.

“The people I support have often suffered major life-changing injuries and although we cannot undo what has happened, we can make a really positive impact on the rest of their lives, and on the lives on those who love and support them day to day,” Mr Pattinson said.

“It is a very rewarding job when you can make a positive difference to lives and that drives me to do the very best for the people I represent every day.

“Claims cases in such circumstances are never only about the money, as multi-million pound settlements are awarded to reflect not just the loss, but also cover the cost of providing a lifetime of care and support.

“Helping people rebuild their lives, and rediscover some form of normality and positivity from the toughest of situations, is what motivates me in what are often complex, difficult and challenging legal cases.”

Mr Pattinson is a member of the APIL Brain Injury Special Interest Group and Spinal Cord Injury Special Interest Group, on the Referral Panel of Headway National Head Injuries Association and also on the Referral Panel of the Spinal Injuries Association.

Testimonials for his work in the leading Legal 500 guide have said he ‘exemplifies absolutely everything that one would wish to see in the skill sets of an ace personal injury lawyer’ and ‘is enormously empathetic with clients and offers great support throughout the litigation process.”
