Expert solicitors in compensation claims relating to surgeon Yaser Jabbar
Hudgell Solicitors are representing the families of children treated by orthopaedic surgeon Mr Yaser Jabbar over a number of years at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
An urgent review of the cases of 721 children treated by Mr Jabbar is now being carried out after an initial Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) investigation raised concerns that children had suffered ‘serious harm’.
The patients were seen by Mr Jabbar in the hospital’s orthopaedic department between 2017 and 2022 and the hospital has issued an apology to patients and families affected.
Children subjected to unjustified and unsuccessful surgeries
Our legal team has seen reports relating to the care of the children and families we represent and they outline unacceptable assessments, examinations, clinical decision-making, and treatments of patients.
We are aware of cases where children have suffered leg length discrepancies following inappropriate and unnecessary surgeries which will require further and prolonged treatment, and nerve injuries causing ongoing pain.
In one particular case, a child underwent an amputation after having been put through a series of procedures. In this case, a review of the treatment found that amputation could possibly have been avoided with a different route of treatment.
There are also references to children being subjected to surgeries which a review panel from the RCS could see no justification for, with children undergoing procedures which brought them no clear benefit.
High percentage of cases where harm caused
The review of individual cases, which is being conducted by five expert surgeons, is expected to take 18 months to complete.
In September 2024 it was reported that of the first 37 cases reviewed, 22 children were found to have come to some degree of harm, 13 of which were classed as “severe harm”, likely to include lifelong injuries.

FAQs
Why should I speak to Hudgell Solicitors about my child’s treatment by Yaser Jabbar?
Our expert legal team has been investigating cases on behalf of clients since summer 2023 and, as we are now instructed by a number of families, we have been able to identify common areas of concern over treatments.
We have also instructed independent experts to review the cases of all of our clients to provide their opinion on the care provided. It means we are well placed to advance claims for compensation with the evidence we have already gathered on cases.
Our team understands that for many patients, news of these investigations, and potential harm caused to their children, has come as a shock and been extremely upsetting. Our team will provide understanding and sympathetic support at all times.
We’ve not heard anything from Great Ormond Street Hospital about a review of our child’s case – does that mean they were not affected?
Great Ormond Street Hospital is believed to be reviewing the treatment of 721 children seen by Mr Jabbar between 2017 and 2022, and this could take up to 18 months.
Given that from the first 37 cases reviewed, 22 children were found to have come to some degree of harm, 13 of which were classed as “severe harm”, it is to be expected that many more children will have been affected.
If you receive a letter setting out the findings of a review into your child’s treatment, contact our team today for advice on the next steps you should take.
Our child was treated by Yaser Jabbar but we are not aware of any issues with the treatment provided. Should we still seek legal advice?
Even if you are not aware of any issues relating to your child’s treatment, we would advise contacting our team so that we can consider requesting the medical records and seeking independent opinion on the treatment provided.
Any medical negligence claims will be issued against Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust to seek compensation for injuries sustained as a result of any proven negligent treatment, the impact those injuries have on the patient’s quality of life, and any subsequent revision surgery required. Compensation for past and future financial loss such as the cost of care or therapy can also be sought.
Very often, injuries in children don’t materialise for several years or until adulthood, so whilst some patients are aware now that they have suffered an injury, some may currently believe their treatment to have been fine, only to find out later in life that things are not as they should be. That makes independent assessments of their treatment as soon as possible essential.
What is the time limit for making a medical negligence claim?
Usually, medical negligence claims have a time limit of three years from the date the negligence occurred, or from the date that a person became aware of negligent treatment.
However, for under-18s, there is no time limit until they reach 18 when the standard 3-year claim period comes into effect.
It means children treated by Mr Jabbar effectively have until they are 21 to make a claim.
Is there a cost to instructing Hudgell Solicitors to represent us?

Were we properly advised on treatment options by Mr Jabbar?
Mr Jabbar has been criticised for poor communication with families with regards to seeking their consent for treatments and procedures, as well as failures to make it clear what kind of complications children could face after undergoing surgery.
Doctors and surgeons are not allowed to carry out any medical treatment unless the patient – or their next of kin – has been fully informed of any potential risks and any alternative treatment options available.
Patients should be fully involved in decisions relating to their medical treatment and be able to make an informed choice about the treatment they receive.
