Humber Bridge Half Marathon: The Runner’s Blog – No 2

Nicola Downey - Humber Half Marathon Training Blog

By Nicola Downey, a member of the Hudgell Solicitors Team taking part in the 2016 Corporate Team Challenge

Due to personal health reasons, I had been out of training and not running for a while, so signing up to take part in the Humber Bridge Half Marathon, as part of Hudgell Solicitor’s team in the Corporate Challenge, has been a good reason and excuse to get back into running.

After a slow start, I now feel that the training is finally on track.

I have slowly started to build up the miles and am really enjoying being back on the road. I have avoided the treadmill completely and all my training has been outside running.

I am very lucky living in London. There have been some beautiful routes so far, along the canal in Hackney and through some of the Royal Parks. It has definitely helped that so far the weather has stayed mainly dry, even with the odd day of glorious sunshine!

This will be my first long distance run since 2014. That year I completed the Brighton Marathon. I absolutely loved it and actually found the training and the event itself very enjoyable. At that time I lived away from family and friends however, so there were a lot less distractions tempting me away from my training programme.

Being back in London now and training for this race, I have found it difficult to fit time in for the longer runs, around work, law school and everything else. I tend therefore, to train in the mornings so that it is out of the way for the day and I then don’t have to force myself to fit it in late at night.

The last half marathon I did was in training for Brighton 2014 and I managed a time of 2 hours 10 minutes. My aim for the Humber Half is to beat that time. I am confident that, without any unexpected anomalies such as injury, I can do it.

I am really looking forward to taking part in another race and being part of team Hudgell Solicitors. My aim for the next 3-4 weeks is to really build up on my mileage so that I have plenty of time to concentrate on timings thereafter.

Hopefully everyone will have a great race on the day and we can be victorious in the Corporate Team Challenge.
