Hull City legend Dean Windass launches search to crown winner
He scored the most famous goal in Hull City’s history – firing in a spectacular volley at Wembley in 2008 to send the Tigers into the Premier League for the very first time in their history.
Now, as Steve Bruce’s men launch a final push for a return to the Promised Land, the Tigers’ official club ambassador and legend Dean ‘Deano’ Windass is leading the search to find the best goal scored in East Yorkshire this season.
The search for the ‘Greatest Goal’ scored across all levels of junior and amateur football in East Yorkshire during the 2015/16 campaign has been launched to coincide with the Tigers final run in – hopefully providing some magic moments from parks across the region that will be replicated at the KCOM Stadium.
Launched in conjunction with the club’s back of shirt sponsors Hudgell Solicitors, the competition will see a shortlist of three finalists invited to the Tigers’ clash with Leeds United on Saturday, April 23.
To enter, teams must email videos of the goals to Hull City firstname.lastname@example.org, with the name of club, the scorer’s name and date of the goal. The goal must have been scored this season and must be clear on the video footage.
Those deemed to be in the running for ‘goal of the season’ by a panel of judges will then be posted on the Tigers’ social media channels, and a final three will be selected.
The finalists will each receive tickets to the Leeds United game, courtesy of Hudgell Solicitors, and see their goals played on the big screen.
Deano will then select a winner, who will not only receive a framed and signed Hull City shirt and a trophy, but most importantly the honour of having scored East Yorkshire’s ‘Greatest Goal’ this season.
Deano, who scored 230 goals in a career spanning two decades, said: “What an honour it will be for a player, of any age, to be able to say they scored the goal of the season out of thousands of teams across East Yorkshire.
“We know there are many great goals scored each and every weekend across the region, and this is the chance to showcase those moments of brilliance to others and find the best goal scored across the region this season.
“We won’t just be looking for individual brilliance like a Dean Windass volley or a Lionel Messi type goal where a player rounds a number of the opposition, but also great team goals. Let’s see the best the region has to offer…who knows, Steve Bruce may end up sending out his scouts on the back of what he sees!”
Simon Wilson, senior solicitor at Hudgell Solicitors, said: “We’ve been delighted to support Hull City in their push for promotion this season, and it is great to see them still in the running for a top two position with only a few weeks remaining.
“The Tigers are the inspiration for thousands of people of all ages to take to the football field each and every weekend, with many young children dreaming of scoring a great goal in front of a packed KCOM Stadium.
“Whilst this competition may not quite offer that experience, the best goals will be played on the large screen at the stadium, in front of thousands of fans, and the winner chosen by Hull City’s greatest every goalscorer. What an honour that is!”
The competition is open for clubs to post videos until midnight on Wednesday, April 20th – meaning if you’ve not caught a great goal on video so far this season, you still have a chance this weekend to score a wonder goal and enter.
