Hull KR are delighted to announce Ian Harper as the club’s latest Community Hero, an award he has received for his efforts to help residents in the East Park area of the city despite fighting his own battle against cancer.
Ian, who is 20, was nominated a Hull KR Community Hero by his proud mother Doreen Harper. Ian works tirelessly to look after his grandmother who lives close by to their home in Newcomen Street and his neighbours who have baby boy twins.
Ian was diagnosed with lymphoma just after he finished his apprenticeship as a bricklayer but despite battling his illness, he still put his energy into ensuring the safety of his community. He cleared the paths of snow during bad weather conditions. He feeds his neighbours cats whilst they are on holiday and looks after their children. He washes residents’ cars and helps the elderly with the maintenance of their houses.
“I am delighted Ian is our latest community hero. He has worked hard to ensure the safety of his community and is clearly a very trustworthy and caring neighbour to have. I wish him a very speedy recovery from his illness.”
Ian will be a guest at Hull KR’s home game against London Broncos on 22nd April with tickets courtesy of club sponsor Neil Hudgell Solicitors, specialists in claims for personal injury and medical negligence.
Doreen said: “This will be a really lovely treat for Ian. He’s just mad keen on the rugby. He’s just finished his treatment and has been so uplifted by being named as a Community Hero.”
