Athlete aiming for the Olympics after discretionary grant from Neil Hudgell Trust

Jonathon Beharrell Training 1A young athelete who dreams of representing his country at the Olympics is aiming for the top after securing a grant from the Neil Hudgell Trust.
Jonathon Beharrell, 17, from Elloughton, took up running in 2011 and found his passion for athletics in 2012.
He started with the 800m, and having initially run the distance in a best time of two minutes and nine seconds, he cut it to exactly two minutes in 2013, and then down again to one minute 55 seconds in 2014, ranking him 23rd in the UK for his age, and fifth in Yorkshire.
A further five 400m competitions saw him finish 38th in the UK in his age category.
Now, Jonathon has been awarded a £600 discretionary grant from the Neil Hudgell Trust – an amount which has helped him to pay for physio for a recent injury and helped him continue a running career which he is pursing in memory of his grandfather.
“My grandad, John Prethro, did a lot of sport and he died in 2011, so that’s why I wanted to take up athletics and inspire others to maybe do the same,” Jonathon said.
“He set up East Hull Harriers years ago and he did a bit of running, but was more into all round general sports. I think he would be proud of me.”
Jonathon, a member of Kingston Upon Hull Athletics Club, added: “I feel like I owe something to my family because they have spent so much time taking me to races. It’s nice to show them I am achieving things.
“I feel so happy about the £600 grant because it has gone towards my running spikes, trainers and competition costs. I also injured my calf and leg, which affected my balance, so I had to pay for physio.
“The Trust is giving something back to the community and everyone is really grateful for the support.”
Jonathon, who studies sports science and history at South Hunsley Sixth Form College, trains at Costello Stadium in west Hull five to six times per week.
He hopes to go to university but is also hopeful of an athletics scholarship, if he can knock another two or three seconds off his times to allow him to be considered.
With his options wide open and determination in abundance, Jonathon said he has his sights set firmly on big challenges and achievements in the world of running.
He said: “I have done a lot of cycling to keep fit, as I didn’t want to completely miss the season with being out of action, but we are concentrating on the winter indoor season now. I want to represent my country at the Olympics one day and I’m focusing on that long term. It’s an exciting time for me and I want to be the best I can be.”
The Neil Hudgell Trust invites groups to apply for grants of up to £2,500, with a total of £100,000 available over a 12-month period.
Jo Hudgell, chair of the trust, said: “Over the past two years, we have been approached by many people and individuals who have fallen short of the Trust’s specific grant criteria, but who we have felt have been deserving of our support.
“As a result, we decided to add the option of the trust awarding discretionary grants to those we feel are deserving. Jonathon is one of a few discretionary grants we have handed out in recent months, as we feel it is right to recognise the sporting ambition in this area.
“He is clearly striving to be the best and, by giving him this £600 grant, we can help him on that journey. Jonathon is clearly a very determined young man and one with a great sporting future ahead of him.
“We wish him all the very best for the future.”
