Hudgell Solicitors staff are preparing to swap their suits for sleeping bags next week when they take on the challenge of sleeping out for the night to raise funds for charity partners Simon On The Streets
Team members Michelle Nurse, Stacey Flegg, Danielle Gaylard and Tracey Chapman are preparing to brave the elements and are keeping their fingers crossed for a relatively warm and dry September evening when taking part in the annual Sleep with Simon event on Thursday, September 27.
Aiming to raise £600 to help turn lives around on the streets of West Yorkshire, the team, who all work in Hudgell’s Leeds office, are taking part in the annual event as part of the firm’s Autumn Fundraising Campaign.
Providing ‘unconditional support’ and making ‘positive changes to lives’
Founded in 1999 and operating across Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield, Simon On The Streets aims to help the ‘homeless and rootless’ who find themselves with nowhere else to turn.
It provides ‘unconditional support’ aimed at empowering them to improve their self-image and begin to think about making positive changes in their lives.
The ‘Sleep With Simon’ fundraiser has become an annual event since first held in 2010, challenging people to face a night in the open to not only raise funds through sponsorship, but hopefully help them gain a better understanding and appreciation of the issues the homeless face, and as a result have a deeper sense of empathy for those who live that way every day.
Litigation assistant Michelle Nurse took part in the event last year and has stepped forward again to sleep out at the Tilt Yard, at the Royal Armories Museum.
She said: “I’m looking forward to the event again. It is not the easiest of nights, but that is the point as it provides a great opportunity to learn more about the challenges of rough sleepers in our community who need some help whilst also raising much needed funds.
“Some members of the team are little nervous about the night but I know they will have each other for support as we all helped one another last year and there was a great spirit on the night. At the end of the night you come away feeling you have a better perspective and more understanding of how difficult life can be for some people.”
Neil Hudgell Trust working to raise awareness and tackle issue of homelessness
The support for Simon On The Streets comes as part of the work of the Neil Hudgell Trust, which launched its “Elephant in the room” campaign in 2017, aiming to raise awareness of and tackle the issue of social inequality of homelessness.
Gordon Laing, General Manager of Simon On The Streets, said: “We are really excited to be holding our 2018 Sleep with Simon event at the Armouries in Leeds and we are looking forward to welcoming the Hudgell Solicitors team.
“Hudgells have been extremely active in their support of us over the past 12 months and have really gone out of their way to make us feel valued.
“Their support has made a huge difference to us and our work with entrenched rough sleepers across West Yorkshire.”
