Paul Price suffered catastrophic injuries in the Manchester Arena terror attack in 2017. Even more tragically he also lost his partner Elaine, a serving police officer, who died at the scene.
Paul and Elaine were waiting for his 13-year-old daughter and friend to come out of the Ariana Grande concert when the explosion happened. The terrorist attack killed 22 people and injured more than 1,000 others.
After being taken to hospital Paul, from Liverpool, spent the first 12 days in an induced coma and a further two weeks in and out of consciousness as he battled to stay alive.
Over the following nine months, he had 35 procedures for his injuries, which included severe burns, broken bones, loss of hearing and embedded shrapnel in his groin, pelvis and back. He also received many years of rehabilitation for both his physical and mental injuries.
Supported by Hudgell Solicitors & Day One Trauma Support
Paul and many other victims from that evening have since been supported by Hudgell Solicitors’ serious injury lawyers and Day One Trauma Support (DOTS) experts.
DOTS, a national charity, works alongside the NHS and others to complement and enhance clinical care for its clients, to ensure practical and emotional needs are properly met – working to promote the best possible chance of recovery.
When it came to seeking legal advice Paul contacted Hudgells following a conversation with another Manchester Arena victim, Martin Hibbert, when they were both attending a rehab session.
Martin was explaining to me the group action for compensation and how I needed to be involved and so I did some research and then contacted them; that’s how the relationship started.
It’s honestly been like a family. Over the years the solicitors have been fantastic, and the legal support has been so good.

Every year 25,000 people are admitted to UK major trauma wards
Paul’s relationship with DOTS began four years after he was injured:
I was at rehab for a routine check-up and I said I was struggling and it was suggested I contact Day One Trauma Support, and really, it was everything I wanted and needed.
I would have benefited from Day One’s support years ago and it makes me sad that not everyone knows they are there for them.
When I came out of hospital, I fell off a cliff as there was no one to hold my hand; it was like a second trauma.
But DOTS does what the NHS can’t and that’s help you transition from hospital to the real world.
DOTS, a national charity, supports anyone affected by a life-changing or catastrophic injury – the patient, the family or the carer.
‘I have benefited massively’
Paul is now an ambassador for the services DOTS’ provides at Salford Royal’s Major Trauma Centre and also provides peer support to others:
I have benefited massively from speaking to a Peer Support Volunteer. To speak to someone who has been there, who understands the physical battle, but also the impact on your mental health.
Now I’ve found Day One, I’m passionate about ensuring other people don’t have to go through what I did on their own. It means a lot for me to give back.
I know Elaine would want me to live the best possible life and that’s what I want for everyone else too.
