A man has been awarded a £627,000 injury at work compensation settlement after being left suffering severe and debilitating pains following an accident at work.
He suffered a crush injury to his foot and was later diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a condition often triggered by an injury which results in much more severe and long-lasting pain.
Such has been the impact on his life he has needed surgery for a device to be fitted which sends low levels of electricity directly into his spinal cord, helping to relieve pain.
Prior to his accident he enjoyed an active life out of work and took part in a large range of physical activities and sports.
However, he has been left unable to enjoy many such activities since, and says some days he can be left simply trying to cope with unbearable pains and sensations.
Compensation provides peace of mind and financial security for family
Following a legal claim on his behalf, led by injury at work solicitor Samuel McFadyen of Hudgell Solicitors, liability for the accident was admitted by insurers representing his employers.
Mr McFadyen, a specialist in handling compensation claims involving catastrophic injuries, said a case was made to recover damages reflecting the injuries suffered, to pay for future surgery and orthotics and to reflect limited future employment prospects.
He said: “This incident has had a huge impact on my client’s quality of life and his ability to support his family. He will require further surgery throughout his life and further rehabilitation.
“We sought damages for physical and psychological injuries, future loss of earnings given the lack of opportunities to progress his career now, and the fact that he is unlikely to be able to work until retirement age, the future cost of surgery and treatment and future care support which he will require.
“I was delighted to be able to secure such a substantial damages settlement which provides security for my client and his family the future.”
The man, said: “It has been difficult and worrying ever since my accident at work because I have a wife and children to support and my worry has always been that this condition would worsen to a point where I wouldn’t be able to work. That would have left us in a difficult situation financially.
“Thankfully, now this legal case has been resolved, I don’t have to worry about keeping a roof above our heads and we have financial security for the future. That is huge in terms of peace of mind as I have been warned my condition is likely to get worse as I get older.
“I never in a million years thought I’d get the amount I have and I am thankful for Samuel, who really took the bull by the horns to get this result for me and my family.”
