Hudgell Solicitors Funds Crash Cards to Help Injured Motorcyclists

Crash cards

Hudgell Solicitors is delighted to be backing a growing national safety scheme which ensures motorcyclists injured on the UK’s roads are given the very best medical treatment as quickly as possible. The card ensures medical crews arriving at the scene of an accident can immediately access key information on the injured rider such as their blood groups and any previous medical problems. The company has funded the distribution of 5,000 Crash Cards, which are placed inside the lining of a biker’s helmet, containing personal details and important medical information.

Motorcyclists using the card also attach a green dot to the outside of their helmet, making it immediately apparent to medical teams that key information can be found inside.

As well as including the rider’s name, age and details of their next of kin, it also contains details of any allergies they suffer from, and any medication they take and their medical history.

This helps save valuable time, particularly if they are either unconscious or unable to communicate.

First established in 2009, Crash Cards are now being distributed freely to thousands of motorcyclists across the UK, and are endorsed by ambulance services across the country.

Susan Hogan, marketing manager at Neil Hudgell Solicitors, said: “Our work as personal injury specialists sees us become involved in many cases surrounding road traffic accidents, and we know from experience that motorcycle accidents are often the most serious in terms of the severity of injuries suffered.

“Our work is all about supporting people after what are often life-changing accidents, helping ensure they get the best possible support and treatment to start rebuilding their lives.

“Obviously, one of the ways in which we help people is though providing the best legal support to help them secure compensation, however, we see our role as much more than that. That is why we work with a network of partners to provide first-class rehabilitation. This is another step towards us providing that extra level of support to accident victims.”

Experienced motorcyclist Steven Rushforth, of Hull, suffered a broken leg in an accident when he was younger, and intends to take advantage of the Crash Card scheme.

“This is such a simple but effective idea, and one I would expect every motorcyclist to take up,” he said.

“Nobody likes to think about being in an accident and the serious injuries which can be suffered, but it is reassuring to think that should something go wrong, medics can have all the information at hand immediately to start treating you.

“It’s a five minute process to fill in the card, and it could save your life.”

Last year in the UK, Crash Card played its part in making motorcycling safer than it has ever been. Motorcyclists were one of only two road user groups to see a reduction in those killed, falling by 10 per cent.

Such has been their success, the pioneer of the scheme, paramedic with the East of England Ambulance Service Ian Burrell, has been awarded an MBE for services to motorcycle safety.

The cards also provide additional advice about what to do for the first on scene of a motorcycle Road Traffic Collision (RTC), often not someone with a medical background.

Using the mnemonic “CRASH”, the card gives helpful advice focusing on the safety of those first on scene and prompting them to gather the key information needed to get the right emergency services and resources to the scene as quickly as possible.

It stands for:
Caution – Don’t put yourself in danger
Road – What is you exact location?
Accident – How many vehicles have been involved?
Serious – Is anyone unresponsive?
Help – Don’t move the casualty, call 999
