Pregnant Francesca Tomlinson, 22, was found to have a ‘very large’ cyst on her ovary during pregnancy. It was not drained by doctors and monitored only. Two months later she as rushed to hospital in agony as they cyst, which now weighed 8lb and 9oz, was leaking into her stomach and had twisted around the ovary. She had to have have her right ovary and fallopian tube removed after an emergency operation and was left with significant scarring on her stomach.
The Legal Process
Medical Negligence claim submitted against the Trust alleging a clear plan to manage the cyst should have been put in place, and that the cyst should have been drained in early pregnancy to prevent it twisting and causing the complications. Case alleged that client should have been offered ultrasound guided drainage to drain the cyst to a manageable size early in treatment. Claimed that had this happened she would have had an uneventful pregnancy and then the cyst could have been removed. She would also have not suffered such significant scarring, and not needed the removal of her fallopian tube and ovary.
Out of court offer of £15,000 made by the defendant and accepted.
“Hudgell Solicitors handled everything for me and kept me informed and up-to-date with my case at all times. I was confident that they would represent my best interests at all times and get me the compensation I was entitled to given all I was put through. I hope my case has led to changes in how the Hospital handles situations like this in future.”
Life after surgery
Ms Tomlinson was left with scarring which was accounted for in her claim relating to her pain and suffering. Thankfully, her first child, Gracie-Jane, was born healthy despite the concerns. She also went on to have a second daughter, Amelia-Rose.
