About the Role

The role

To join our growing Civil Liberties Team to represent clients in civil claims against public authorities and representing families at inquests.  Are you looking for a new challenge and wanting to work for an ambitious and dynamic firm with a diverse range of high-profile cases then look no further!

This is a great opportunity to join an engaging team of specialists, where everyone works closely to deliver the best results for our clients and their families.  You will work with a friendly and supportive team on a variety of cases including civil actions against the police and prison service and inquests.

The successful candidate will be either a Grade A or Grade B qualified solicitor (or similar) and have experience in the area of civil liberties.  You must show commercial awareness and have a drive to succeed.

What you will be doing

  • Representing clients with civil actions from inception trough to conclusion.
  • Liaising with clients, counsel, defendants and other parties.
  • Collating and reviewing documentation and evidence.
  • Obtaining medical/accountancy evidence when required and have the ability to interpret that evidence and advice accordingly.
  • Expeditiously progressing cases in line legal parameters while managing client expectations.
  • Litigating cases.
  • Actively engaging in business development to ensure high visibility of the department and wider company.
  • Developing the skills of junior colleagues in the department.
  • Adhering closely to client protocol and process.
  • Complying with the required standard for internal procedures.
  • Any other duties commensurate with this post.

What you will need

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • You will have experience of working on litigative cases.
  • Preferably have experience of dealing with Legal Aid.
  • Have knowledge of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and the Human Rights Act and be up to date with current legislation.
  • Have a good understanding of the Coronial process.
  • The ability to draft letters of claim/instruction, statements and prepare court submissions.
  • Have the ability to gather, scrutinize and fact check evidence.
  • Be able to work sympathetically and effectively with a wide range of clients with differing needs.
  • Have excellent organisational skills and time management skills, including the ability to prioritise multiple pending tasks and provide realistic timescales for completion, to ensure that key deadlines are met.
  • Be respectful towards others and have a positive, willing and ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Be keen to learn, interested in driving your own career progression and be proactive in taking ownership of this.
