Top ten: Community Heroes Rewarded For Public Spirit

Pam Piercy

A programme set up to highlight the work done by local heroes has so far rewarded ten community champions for their outstanding public service and dedication.

Community Heroes – an award for individuals who make a positive contribution to the local community – was launched last July by Neil Hudgell Solicitors in partnership with Hull City AFC and then was also introduced at Bridlington Town AFC and Hull Kingston Rovers Rugby League Club

“Neil Hudgell Solicitors very much values being involved in our local community and it’s great to be able to provide a way for people to highlight the efforts of these previously unsung heroes and tell them how much they’re appreciated.”

Now, a year on, the initiative has rewarded ten community champions who’ve all received tickets to either Hull City, Bridlington Town of Hull KR matches, courtesy of sponsors Neil Hudgell Solicitors.

Recipients of the award include two friends who tried to save the life of a friend when he collapsed during a game of football and a former Great Britain international athlete and team manager.

Neil Hudgell, managing director of Neil Hudgell Solicitors, said: “I’ve been delighted by interest in the award and that we’ve had the opportunity to thank these Community Heroes for their hard work and kindness to others.

Neil Hudgell Solicitors are no win, no fee lawyers specialising in compensation claims for personal injury, medical negligence and professional negligence. The business has offices in Hull, Leeds and the West Midlands.

Recipients so far of the Community Hero awards 2011/12:

Jacob Richards and James Oliphant – Jacob and James, both 14, had been playing football with Joshua Fell at their local playing field in Hornsea when 15-year-old Joshua, a keen sportsman and Hull City fan, collapsed.  Jacob and James first thought Joshua had gone to sleep, but suddenly realised he wasn’t breathing. Jacob immediately began first aid to try to revive Joshua before showing James how to continue CPR while he telephoned for an ambulance. However, despite the boys’ efforts, Joshua was later pronounced dead at Hull Royal Infirmary. Jacob and James were put forward for the Community Heroes Award by Donna and Richard Fell, Joshua’s parents, who also encouraged others to nominate the boys.

Pam Piercey – Former GB international athlete and team manager Pam, who’s from Hull and now lives in Beverley, has been dedicated to athletics as both a competitor and a coach for more than 50 years. She’s been involved in all levels of the sort from the grassroots at Hull Achilles Athletics Club – where she still regularly takes training at the Costello Stadium and along the Humber Bridge – to European and Olympic competition.  Seventy five-year-old Pam was nominated by lifelong Hull City fan Jack Howey.

Lisa Taylor – Lisa, a teacher at Sir Henry Cooper School, Hull, was nominated for the brave way she continued to teach her pupils despite dealing with personal tragedy. She learnt that her step father was critically ill the day before many of her pupils were due to sit their GCSE exam. Instead of leaving the pupils, Lisa stayed with her Year 11 class and carried on helping them to revise for their exam. Sadly, Lisa’s step father later died. Two pupils, Reece Wilson and Carl Robinson, were thankful for Lisa’s dedication to her job and nominated her for the Community Heroes Award.

Cath Dooley – Cath is a long-serving and dedicated volunteer at Hull Dockers RLFC. She has been actively involved with Hull Dockers for more than 17 years. Her links began when her son Mark started playing for the club aged 14. She has been treasurer and secretary of the youth section and has been in her present role as club co-ordinator for the past seven years. Cath was nominated by Hull Dockers member Jackie Evans.

Cliff Park – Since 2008, Cliff has raised thousands of pounds by organising a match day car park at the Jubilee Church on Walton Street, a stone’s throw from the KC Stadium. All the income is used to pay for an Annual Fun Day, free to all the residents near the church. As well as organising the car park, Cliff runs a weekly coffee morning at the church attended by around 50 people who enjoy chat and support. He also helps at numerous other church activities including serving lunches to homeless people on Christmas Day. Cliff was nominated by Steve Whittington, the pastor and manager of Jubilee Church.

Debbie Peacock – Debbie set up GRIN, Greatfield Residents Improving Their Neighbourhood. The group gets members of the community to work together to make the estate a better place to live. GRIN runs a successful club for children at St Stephen’s Church, fund-raises to provide low-cost trips and days out for families and provides training opportunities to local residents. Debbie, who works tirelessly to manage the group, was nominated by GRIN volunteer Zailie Barratt.

Steve Broadhead – Steve has been the coach for the East Hull Rugby Youth Club under 11s for the past five years. He played for Hull Boys and, despite fighting meningitis three times, managed to get his name on the Shield of Endeavour. He continued to play until his mid-20s, and got into coaching when his youngest son started playing at East Hull ARLFC. Steve was nominated for the Community Heroes Award by his wife Rebecca, who’s also the under 11s team manager.

Mike Crabb – Mike has been head coach of South Hunsley Swimming Club for many years. The club has 150 swimmers who train 4 nights a week. Mike, a volunteer, attends these sessions to pass on his expertise and encourage all the swimmers. On his few nights off, he is busy organising galas not only for South Hunsley Swimming Club but for many other clubs in Hull and the East Riding. He was nominated by his friend Nick Ward.

Ian Harper – Ian was rewarded with tickets for the Hull KR match against London Broncos for his efforts to help residents in the East Park area of Hull, despite fighting his own battle against cancer. Ian, who is 20, was nominated a Hull KR Community Hero by his proud mother Doreen Harper. Ian works tirelessly to look after his grandmother who lives close by to their home in Newcomen Street and his neighbours who have baby boy twins.
