Racial Abuse FAQs

What is racial abuse?

The 1970s and 1980s were sadly blighted by prejudicial behaviour in many walks of life, including through the attitudes of police officers towards young Asian and black men, who were often subjected to a wide range of unfair treatment.

An issue which has been subject to significant media attention has also been the world of sport, with a number of former youth footballers of professional clubs alleging racial and sexual abuse whilst trying to forge careers in the game.

What type of racial abuse claims do we handle?

The distress and insecurity that racial abuse can cause in the mind of victims is difficult to imagine or relate to, even more so in circumstances where children were subjected to abuse by adults. Sadly, this was the case for many young people when they were growing up, particularly in environments where there were racial minorities.

We realise many people feel too embarrassed or intimidated about what has happened to come forward, but our team at Hudgell Solicitors are dedicated to helping people speak out.

Our experts are highly experienced in supporting survivors of all forms of abuse, including incidents which happened recently and cases of historical abuse.

What acts of direct racial abuse are there?

The use of inappropriate language or racial comments towards you – made by colleagues and/or your employer.

  • Harassment, bullying or victimisation.
  • Detrimental treatment because of your race.
  • Unwanted racial conduct towards you.
  • Sacked or dismissed on basis of your race.

Thankfully, such deplorable incidents are no longer as common, but if it’s taken you decades to speak out about the abuse you suffered, it can sometimes still be possible to launch legal action to deliver the justice you deserve.

If you believe you’ve been subjected to racial abuse, we will seek to help you to gain redress for your pain and suffering by pursuing a racial abuse and abuse claim.

How long have I got to make a claim?

Even if the racism took place a long time ago, do not let it stop your pursuit of justice. Our discrimination specialists will advise you whether you will be able to make a claim and will fight to get your case heard.

If you want our racial abuse solicitors to investigate your case, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can gather as much evidence as possible to properly prepare your claim.

What funding options are available?

At Hudgell Solicitors, we pursue cases on a ‘No win, no fee’ basis – to help you to achieve some closure without any financial risks. If we agree to take on your claim, we will explain all the options and advise you on the best way to fund for your case.

If you give us honest and accurate instructions – and fully cooperate with us to try to win your case, you won’t have to pay a penny, other than an agreed percentage of any damages settlement you receive.
